Throughout history there have been iconic characters who appeared larger than life. What would happen if twelve of them were to meet? Stuart Rawlings used this device to develop his book, Delusions. Twelve great individuals, including Jesus of Nazereth and Gautama Buddha are inmates of Rosewood, a mental health institution. Rawlings creates a world of “what if” wherein Eleanor Roosevelt makes suggestions to Barak Obama about how he should run the world, and Hitler tries himself for war crimes.
As a logical next step in the creation process, Rawlings and the rest of the folks at Sierra Dreams Press are teaming up with American River Films to create a series of animated videos based on the book. The first one, Jesus Meets Jefferson is planned to be complete in June 2015. In the teaser published on the Jesus Meets Jefferson Kickstarter Crowdfunding Campaign, Jefferson asks Jesus the evocative question, “Do you believe you are the Son of God?” To which Jesus makes an evasive non-answer.
Reviews of the book indicate that the dialogue is often funny, and definitely thought provoking. If you thought Jesus cut a swath through the money lenders in the New Testament, you’ll be amazed at what happens when he goes to the mall during the holiday shopping season! Freud meets Hitler in another episode. Like many other works of its kind, Delusions makes pointed comments about the way human beings interact and how they behave in the modern world. Since the book is a work of fiction, and most of the character long dead, they can voice thought-provoking statements without offense.
The animations are bright, with cartoon style characters. The voices are done by Rawlings himself, and he also plays the guitar instrumental pieces that are used as background. The animator is David Anistasiou, a multitalented videographer.
According to the production notes on the crowdfunding website, most of the work for the first video is already done. The voices are recorded, the art work is complete, and the sound mixing is also finished. The animator has developed a streamline process that is speeding the work right along. However, the process is running up against a need for newer and better equipment in order to complete the production process in a timely fashion. The items needed include a computer with a quad-core processor and a good backup system.
