Sweets parties, weddings, birthday parties…all mean a trip to the bakery, and a nervous trip home, hoping not to crush fancy icing, while worrying that the ice cream cake is melting. What if you could bring the bakery to your own front door? This is what Heather Sitzmore hopes to do.
She has purchased an old-style travel home that she has christened “Lola” in honor of the grandmother, and plans to turn it into a mobile bakery. Heather learned to cook as a young girl, and collected favorite family recipes. She recombined icings and cookies, cupcakes and icings to create new takes on old favorites. She worked for a banquet facility, planning and managing special events; then left that job to start her own business in order to have more time with her son. She has, since he was in junior high, been baking for fund-raisers, selling baked goods at swap meets, and – in general – learning what needs to be done in the catering business.
In order to fulfill Heather’s dream properly, Lola needs a new “skin”. It would retain the travel trailers basic retro appearance, but will add a dark color to the lower half of the trailer, while adding pink trim and a line drawing of a pink umbrella – Heather’s company logo – on the upper part. Lola also needs a generator, the stove refurbished, a customer window and a new booth for the inside.
The business will have basic start-up costs that are common to any business in Iowa, plus the supplies and other things that will be needed for a bakery. There will also be marketing costs, and probably a few surprise expenses along the way.
Rewards for this Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign are tote bags, t-shirts and cookies – shipped only inside the United States. You can even get a six-month cookie subscription – one dozen of Heather’s mouthwatering, made-from-scratch delights sent to your home. Just visiting Heather’s website is a gustatory temptation. Imagine opening up a box of her creations each month.
If you happen to live in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area, for upper level contributions you can have Heather bring Lola to your home or event. The over-all menu will include cookies, cupcakes, Italian ices and ice-cream. To learn more about the scrumptious offerings from the Pink Umbrella, visit Heather’s website. You will find everything from peanut butter cookies to chocolate truffles – and more. You can learn more about her business plans by visiting the crowdfunding website.
Heather loves to bake, and this isn’t her first time at running her own business. This is her answer to *ahem* being able to have her cake and eat it, too. She has always wanted a bakery, but didn’t really want to be pinned down to staying in one spot. The mobile bakery is the compromise that will allow her to realize a childhood dream. But it does take a lot of work and cash to turn a vintage travel trailer into a food truck. This could be your opportunity to help feed hungry folks in Iowa – cookies and Italian ices, anyway – through contributing to this crowdfunding event.
