Beverly Freed loves cats. With some Kickstarter crowdfunding help and community support, her Charming Cat Café is going to share the love so that other fond-of-felines folks will be able to have a place where they can socialize with their favorite species. Cat cafes, now finally making their way to North America, are all about providing a place for people to enjoy beverages, snacks, and the company of cats.
This café for cats will be the ideal destination for cat lovers, and a haven for people who love cats, but can’t have pets. As they wait to enter the cat lounge, they can enjoy snacks and conversation in a comfortable environment. Cat-themed art painted by local artists will hang on the café walls. Some of the artwork will be for sale along with books, some autographed by a local author. Other merchandise includes mugs, t-shirts, totes, cat toys, caps, and, of course, mouse pads. The café will be completely separate from the cat lounge, with a shared wall of glass in between. The internal doorway that visitors will use will have an “air lock” so that cats won’t be able to dash into the café or out the front door.
Once in the cat lounge, you can sit in comfy chairs, do some work with the free Wi-Fi or just browse the web or read a book, all the while enjoying the company of cats who are available for adoption. The residents will be lounging in cat trees, climbing the “catified” walls, making sure of the cat scratchers, traveling the walk-about, coming over to play, or providing you with the opportunity to just admire them while napping.
Sounds like fun, doesn’t it? And fun is part of the goal, because cats know how to have fun, and they have a lot to teach people about the fine art of enjoying life. But it’s also a service to the community, and the city of Lewisville is pleased at Freed’s plans to alleviate the problem of homeless cats. The crowdfunding campaign’s goal is to raise $30,000 by August 21. Freed has already proven herself with the establishment of her 501(c)3 organization, Kitty Save, which became self-sustaining within its first year. Kitty Save partners with local city and county shelters to rescue cats. For over ten years, Kitty Save pet adoptions have been conducted at local pet stores. Kitty Save does its part to reduce the percentage of homeless and euthanized cats, and works with animal shelters to alleviate the shelter cat population. But she wanted to do something new. As she puts it, “the time has come to challenge that old paradigm with a modern approach: the cat café.”
The best part of The Charming Cat Café is the opportunity for cats to find a home by selecting a new guardian and becoming part of a family that will treasure its new pet. The goal of The Charming Cat Café will be to match the right cat with the right adopter.
The cat café will also have an entertainment agenda that will please its clientele. Private visits with local assisted living facilities will let residents have private time in the cat lounge. Special needs students and participants can spend time with the laid-back cats. Feeling creative? Kitties are a great inspiration to go along with canvas, acrylics, and ideas. How about a date night, where couples can enjoy each other in the company of cats? Or take part in a hands-on workshop to create a cardboard play castle where your cat can rule in regal style.
